“7th Asian Festival”

tentsetup

The “7th Asian Festival” is a two-day free cultural event to promote a greater understanding of Asian and cultures to the general public. The Asian Festival has grown into a huge success over the years by attracting attendees from all over the D.C. Metro area and beyond.

Each participating Asian country has an opportunity to share its unique music, cultural performances, food, fashion, handicrafts and other products. Asian festival has blended together trade opportunities, product marketing, cultural displays, tennis and other sporting events.

The festival has something for each and every attendee. This largest Asian Festival in the Mid-Atlantic area features at least 35 authentic Asian food vendors, traditional performances on 3 separate stages and more than 150 multicultural retail stores. Each year, we select one Asian country as the ‘show-casing’ country, and this year, it is THE PHILIPPINES.

THE PHILIPPINE VILLAGE showcases the country’s rich heritage, diverse culture and warm people. At the tourism showcase, marvel at the Philippines’ many attractions: diving in the heart of world center of biodiversity Tubbataha reef, the ancient Terraces of Banaue, the pristine beaches of Boracay, Cebu, Bohol and Camiguin; colonial architecture in historic Intramuros and Vigan and the exotic festivals in Davao and Aklan.

Cultural shows feature traditional dances like tinikling and singkil. Dance the night away to music from The Speaks and Darna Kings’ Raf Toledo and many more! Take the videoke challenge! An interactive tent with martial arts (arnis), sports and indigenous games – including writing in the ancient baybayin script – is perfect for kids. Fruit carving and ice carving demonstartions plus food sampling and a cooking demonstration round out the culinary experience.

“Simbuyo 2010 - A Standing Ovation”

Press Release by PAFC

simbuyo2010

<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
<!--[endif]-->

“Bravo” was the call of the evening. For planning, execution, for performers and behind-the-scenes work – everyone did their best in bayanihan fashion, and the crowd was most appreciative. A spectator Josie Li Cruz from Maryland said, “Very professionally presented, outstanding, credible participants. Makes one feel really good to be Pinoy”.

Elder Robert Rich of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints welcomed the Filipino and Filipino American community in the spirit of friendship. This is the second time Simbuyo performed at the Church’s Visitors Center. Ambassador Willie Gaa recalled our forefather’s declaration of Independence so we now enjoy the fruits of their struggle; while Chair of the Board Ador Carreon thanked the performers and volunteers who have worked together to bring this Simbuyo event, performers and volunteers who have worked together to bring this Simbuyo event, the second offering of the Philippines.

The Young Adults Choir of St. Columba rendered stirring interpretations of the national anthems. Other songs included “Hesus” and “Urong-Sulong”.

Fil-Am Christian Church Anklung Ensemble of Frederickburg, VA performed a lively “Kalesa”, and a “Visayan Medley”. Instruments made out of bamboo, resonate individual notes and meld together into fascinating melodies.

Dances added visual delights like the “Igorot Dance” and “Malong-Malong” by the Fil-Am Ministry of All Saints Church of Manassas, VA.

The Singing Diplomats of the Philippine Embassy surprised and delighted the audience with their “Ikaw lang ang Mamahalin” and “Ikaw ang Mahal Ko”. Allan Palacios Chan, Philippine-born tenor definitely mesmerized all with “Bayan Ko”.

The incredibly colorful and refreshing gowns of Alfonso “Boy” Guino-o from Davao City added a nice touch to the evening. Giuno-o’s gowns skillfully combine fabric and design, reflecting the culture and influences of his native Mindanao.

Jose Rizal’s “Mi Ultimo Adios”, was interpreted in dance by Jason Ignacio of the City Dance Ensemble, a contemporary dance company based in Washington, DC. The audience was spell bound by this avant garde art form.

Performers and members of the audience lingered long after the show, still on a high form the exhilaration of the evening.

“Hatid Saya sa Ating Mga Ina - Part2”

-By Sis Sally Velasco, MDG, UPLB ’84 and Bro Dale Aguirre, MDG, CSJL '86-

Another successful and fun-filled Mother’s Day tribute was held at Mrs. Philippines Senior Home in Oxon Hill, MD last May 8, 2010.

The Tau Gamma Phi and Tau Gamma Sigma of Mid-Atlantic Region outreach program to Filipino elderly home on its second phase titled "Fiesta sa Mrs Philippine Homes, Hatid Saya sa ating mga Ina 2"

Acting Secretary General Eric Talavera spearheaded the set-up.  Music and dance was also provided as part of the entertainment. Bro Jhun Cajayon, Emcee Extraordinaire, held everybody’s attention all night.  His wife, Clarinda (CC), was also on hand, assisting with greeting and talking to the Home’s residents and guests.  She also graced us with songs as part of the programme.

Also assisting was Brod Mike Alejandro’s better half, Melodie, with the emceeing.  She, along with CC, took turns with the mic throughout the evening.  Brod Mike came in later that evening, straight from work, to help with the service and likewise with the clean-up committee.

Home cooking food was prepared and brought by the Fraternity members. They all took time off to prepare their special talents in cooking to share it with our dearly beloved "second" mothers.

Donations came from Triskelions - Mike Alejandro, Alan Uyenco, Teresita Eleazar, Sally Velasco, John Ocampo, Neil Fulgencio, Eric Talavera, Tess Santiago, Raul Castillo, Nathan Bernabe and Jagger Wakefield. TMAR members lined up behind the buffet line and served the food with Filipino fare and yummy cakes for dessert as well.

The night started with the US National Anthem and our very own Bayang Magiliw. A prayer followed by giving thanks to the Lord for a wonderful gathering of people. Donated door prizes (twin bed sheets, towel sets, toiletries set from Bed, Bath & Beyond and among others) were given away for the Oldest Mother, Best Dress, Singing contest winners, and Question and Answer portions of the program.

Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region (TMAR) members on-hand were Eric Talavera, Jhun Cajayon, Tess Santiago, John Ocampo, Nathan Bernabe, Sally Velasco, LA Fernandez, Mike Alejandro.  Cherry Uyenco, on behalf of Brod Alan was present and entertained the guests. Likewise Sis Tess’ daughter (and friend) played the flute and sang.

The night’s Honored guest, Robert Borje, Philippine 2nd Consul, also graced the floor and serenaded the mothers with classic songs.  Later on, he joined other dancers Ador and Nanette Carreon, representing the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc

It was a great night to spend with the mothers at Mrs. Philippines Homes.  Kudos to TMAR's special bond of brotherhood and sisterhood for all the hard work and dedication put into this affair a reality and bringing the mission of the Triskelions' Grand Fraternity and Sorority a success for community services to our kababayans.

“Christmas for Everyone”

-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB ’03-

PP09

It is the season for sharing! The first ever ‘Outreach Christmas Party’ of Mid-Atlantic Region’s Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority was held last December 12, 2009 at Mrs. Philippines Home, Oxon Hill, Maryland. This significant event took place as to some extent an honor to the elderly residents of the home. They celebrated it wholeheartedly with fellow fraternity brothers, sorority sisters, residents and other prominent Filipino community leaders as guests.

Festive as it was, the Christmas Party of Triskelions gave way to reach out to their deemed ‘second mothers’ of the home through this Christmas sharing. It may be remembered that the residents were also given a celebration as tribute to all the mothers in the home last May, Mothers’ Day. This time and for the second time, unselfishly Triskelions once again shared this noteworthy moment with them.

With approximately 60 attendees, Triskelions carried out the event following a simple flow of program. After honoring the Philippine and American National Anthems, saluting guests followed. Mid-Atlantic Triskelions sang in chorus as a special presentation for the residents and guests. It was the same as serenading the lovely mothers, led by Mrs. Cici Cajayon, who as well rendered another special solo number after a brief motivational talk about the season we all are celebrating at this time of the year.

Community leaders were present that night to share their time and pieces of inspirational messages. They were Mrs. Digna J. Amon,  Zambalenos USA President, Mr. Ador S. Carreon, President of Philippine-American Foundation for Charities, Inc., Philippine Embassy Third Secretary and Vice Consul Robert A. Borje and Pinoy Herald’s Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Rene R. Calandria.

Dinner was served at the festive buffet table, with most of Filipino dishes that “Pinoys” typically love to eat. Followed were the fun activities prepared by the Triskelions that include games, raffle drawing in between and karaoke singing to break the ice.

The participation of guests and organizers has been interactive in the sense that the hosts of the program, Bro. Jhun Cajayon and Bro. Neil Fulgencio, brought the spirit into the warm and homey atmosphere of the venue. In addition, the disc jockey of the night, Bro. Eric Talavera, played songs that warmed up the ambiance for everyone until it brought the crowd into the mood for dancing.

As the program was designed for sharing, the program ended with gift giving and presentation of tokens of appreciation. The residents and other guests were given the gifts as simple remembrances. Also, a surprise framed compilation of residents’ and Triskelions’ photos for the home and its residents was handed over to Mrs. Digna Amon, as a representation. And just the same, mementos as symbols of deep gratitude were presented both to Vice Consul Robert A. Borje and to a visiting fraternity brother, Bro. John Elmer Aguigam (UP ‘72) of San Diego Regional Council. Bro Elmer devoted his much time on a two-consecutive Saturdays to join the Mid-Atlantic Triskelions and be in service to the community, same as Vice Consul Borje.

The very essence of the celebration is about sharing joy and making the spirit of Christmas alive in everyone’s heart. So uniting everyone to be one family was what they have offered as their “Perfect Gift”.

“Paskong Pinoy: Pasko ng Pag-Asa”

-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB ’03-

PP09

On its 5th in the row, the annual Paskong Pinoy event (a free holiday concert) paved the way for another new beginning of hope and celebration for the Filipino American community in the area. Held last December 5, 2009 at Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center, Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., the joyous event was attended by approximately 200 guests and was actively participated by Fil-Am community organizations and skillful performers and participants, all pride of the Greater Metro DC Area.

Sponsored by the Embassy of the Philippines, The Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc. (PAFC) and The Filipino Organization of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), together with Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region (TMAR) and Alpha Phi Omega District of Columbia Alumni Association (APODCAA), the event marked another huge success in the history of traditional Filipino Christmas celebration around the world. Making this year’s theme adapt an ideally suited answer to the condition of our motherland, it was called “Paskong Pinoy: Pasko ng Pag-Asa” (A Christmas Concert of Hope).

Performers from around Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC offered their pieces of skills and talents through a variety of sweet serenading Christmas carols. The special performances were as passionate as ever that they drew significant lines of hope and answer to homesickness, the real essence of the celebration. Some of these performers who showcased talents were Northern Virginia Rondalla, St. Coumba Children’s Choir, Rodriguez Brothers, Our Lady of Lourdes Quartet, All Saints Fil-Am Ministry Choir, Filipino Ministry Choir of St. Columba, Young Adults Choir of St. Columba, Philippine American Medical Mission of Metropollitan Washington, DC Mission of Mercy Choral Group, Fil-Am Ministry of St. Michael the Arcanghel of Silver Spring Choir, Ms. Margarita Gomez Giannelli and Fil-Am Christian Church Anklung Ensemble of Fredericksburg, VA.

The program ended with the participation of the audience singing “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit” led by all performers singing on stage.

“Brotherhood for a Cause”

-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB ’03-

cause

Brothers and sisters bonded by courage and volunteerism are always at service. The Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority of Mid-Atlantic Regional Council promptly responded to the call of duty to help out their fellow kababayans who were solely affected by the natural disasters that hit the country just recently. Despite the concurrent celebrations they have planned ahead, the welfare of fellowmen comes first.

As civil servants of the community, everyone in the regional council agreed to give out his piece of financial contribution to the victims of the tragic disasters Ondoy and Pepeng. Alongside personally giving out support to their relatives back home, they were somehow still able to share something on behalf of the fraternity. The Triskelions consolidated the amount given by its volunteer members. Through Kapuso Foundation, GMA 7 Network as selected media partner on this effort, their little help were able to reach the affected kababayans who need this help most. Becoming “Good Samaritans” in their own simple way make their little help a huge advantage to our fellow Filipinos in the Philippines. And this little offering could be the least thing they could do but the best goal they could achieve in the name of service and brotherhood.

Mid-Atlantic Regional Council's Secretary General Shares his 41st Founding Anniversary Message to Triskelions of the Region

anniversary

 “Brods,

Welcome to the Tau Gamma Phi Mid-Atlantic Regional Council’s 41st Founding Anniversary celebration.  Over the past few months, there has been great interest in revisiting the life and times of our brotherhood, the Tau Gamma Phi.  All the way, we have shown how it is to be part of our prestigious fraternity and how it changed our lives as individuals of our society. In certain number of aspects, we have depicted the trying times of being Triskelions. And at the end of the day, we have just shown how we reigned Supreme in our own time and in our own right.

Looking back to past significant months, a reunion or summer getaway in July of 2009 brought together more than 50 members and families of both regional councils of Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Hand in hand we have reached our 4th decade founding year and we have shown solidarity in our held convention the recent year. On the same respect, we’ve had a number of worth note-taking activities and services, starting with the collaborative service to migrant teachers with once our regarded opponent fraternity. We’ve been known through these efforts, and humbly, various regions look up to us. All these years we have lived by example and we have been guided by our principles and history. And together we, ourselves, were able to create HISTORY. Our history retold the successes and even misfortunes of our own.  Now, it is the time to recount what we have gained all these years. Just last year we celebrated our Ruby Anniversary. Hours from now, we’ll be going 41 - another year of primacy, all for the glory of our Tau Gamma Phi.

In addition to the 41st anniversary celebration we are having right now at Dandy’s dinner cruise, varied forms of celebrations are now taking place worldwide. These include golf tournament, picnic at parks and bar hopping at various clubs and establishments in Manila and other cities globally.  In Manila, our very own Amoranto Stadium and Rizal Coliseum serve as two equally relevant venues for our major grand fraternity celebration.  Also, some brothers are planning to meet the goal of initiating the bloodletting project, making Tau Gamma Phi on the record of being the bloodiest fraternity in the world with regards to blood donation to be carried out in a single day.

We have had contacts with more than 9 regional councils across America with estimated 500+ members of our Tau Gamma Phi during its 41st year in the history. Starting with this, we are still eagerly looking forward in establishing more of our brothers in terms of number and strength. I hope you enjoy yourself as you scroll through our many pages of rich history and relieve some of the wonderful memories of our years of decadence.  Keep in mind that we are always into establishing our network within our community in an effort to make our fraternity a service-oriented that is ready to serve at all times. Being Triskelions is a worthy lifetime experience, and I am more than proud to be called one.

To our brethren of the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity, cheers for more glorious years ahead of us.  Happy 41st Founding Anniversary!

In the spirit of a Triskelion,

Dale Q. Aguirre

Secretary General”

Recognition Awarded to Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region by the

Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc.

-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB '03-

pafc

The Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc. (PAFC) has announced a number of recipients of its 2009 Certificate of Recognition Awards on September 20, 2009. The awards program recognizes individuals or groups in every part of the metropolitan district area that have exhibited their support to PAFC throughout its glorious years of serving the Filipino-American community in the area. The awards recognize various community service projects and unselfish dedication of organizations for the welfare of their fellows in this locale.

Not the first on the row, Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Regional Council (TMAR) again gladly received this honorable merit through the representation of the council president, Bro Dale Aguirre. A formal invitation followed a formal certificate awarded to TMAR, recognizing their efforts of rendering sorts of services offered to the community in their area.

For the past years of active community involvement of the TMAR in the region, its partnership and worthy camaraderie with the PAFC has blossomed into more effective service-oriented activities together. And such cooperation will continue to provide more significantly fruitful projects to be dedicated to Filipinos all through the coming years.

The Very First Official Fraternity House of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council Established

-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB '03-

frat house

Extra attainments of a vision for the Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Regional Council (TMAR) to have finally designate their very first headquarters of the council. Located in Fort Washington, Maryland, the TMAR’s official Fraternity House was established. Having been operating for almost a month, a momentous official gathering of the resident members of Mid-Atlantic has already taken place as to denominate the area their official “hideaway” site. The home-like ambiance of the place as well as the accessibility and commonness of the area made it even more conducive for organization and small and simple affairs of the TMAR. Not huge and same as to the number of the residents of the region, this locale has been and will be proving the worth of having such satisfying ownership.

Not only files and fraternity-owned equipments are kept private in their nest but also setting up a relaxing atmosphere to the so-called home of the TMAR announces a statement. For the TMAR, it is indeed an accomplishment. In addition, it is worth more of the binding reasons and identity relevance.  The collection of all the significant articles that can tell TMAR’s history shall be engraved beyond the hoard of certificates of merit and various miscellaneous ownerships. For what would be accounted is the very sense of attainment of such desires for the good of the rest of the members of the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority in the region.

The Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority initiated the wall clock giving on three of Filipino establishments in their areas last August 2009. The beneficiaries of these reputable accoutrements were the Salina’s Oriental Store of Fort Washington, MD and Manila Oriental in Alexandria, VA, and Kababayan Filipino Gourmet in Woodbridge, VA and Mrs. Philippines Home for Senior Citizens in Oxon Hill, MD, in which they are known to be the Filipinos’ stopping places in these territories. As complements by the fraternity, wall clocks and certificates of recognition were handed down to these equally famed hangout spots. For the following months, Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region shall continue this good start and most probably to adopt more common Filipino venues to be given these decorative implements as well.

A Respected U.P. Triskelion Visits the Region
-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB '03-

bro manny3

A dinner treat in honor of Bro Manny Escalante (UP ‘73) was held on 20th August, 2009. Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region (TMAR) once again gathered to show gratitude to a respected brother and his family from Canada. All the way from Calgary, the Escalante family decided to spend days off to roam around sites of Washington, D.C. Part of this memorable visit was to be welcomed by Bro Manny’s fellow Triskelions. After a fine buffet dinner at Seafood Palace, Temple Hills in Maryland, chatting as sort of bonding took place. The TMAR and Bro Manny and his family were able to mingle well despite the very limited time everybody had in one weeknight. Moreover, Mid-Atlantic Region’s Secretary General, presented its very own memento to give credit to the honorable guest. Bro Manny was as well handed with one of the region's own official fraternity shirts as a souvenir. The Escalante family is scheduled to fly back to Calgary on Saturday, 22nd of August, bringing with them a very significant memory from their visit to the region and the warmth of the welcome offered by their Triskelion family here in greater DC area.

The Bayanihan Spirit: Philippine Tradition, Culture and Heritage Highlighted

-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB ’03-

The Philippine contingent brought home the bacon! It was its 2nd year that the Filipino pride was showcased and applauded as it was awarded the Best Over-all Exhibit in this year’s Asian Festival. Held last August 4, 2009 in Reston, Virginia, the annual Festival’s Destination Asia exhibited collaborative masterpieces and displayed healthy competition between and among several Asian countries known to exist and co-exist. The effort and creativity of every participant brought life to the whole celebration.

<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
<!--[endif]-->

Having the pride of the roots, the Philippine delegate, led by the partnership between Philippine Embassy and the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc., made way to make it to the top. The collection of colorful exhibit materials, fruit carvings, costumes and native dances undoubtedly caught the attention of the organizers, judges, guests and other fellow Filipinos who witnessed this year’s event. It was indeed a joint success and effort by this partnership, together with the rest of the supporting organizations, namely, Paete Carvers Association, Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority of Mid-Atlantic Region, Barangay ng Sining Pilipino, Tanghalang Pilipino Angklung Ensemble,, UP Alumni Association of DC/MD/VA, College of the Holy Spirit Alumnae Association, World Bank Group-IMF Filipino Association (WBIFA) and Philippine American Metropolitan Washington Engineers (PAMWE), NaFFAA and Travel Outlet.

The demonstration of creative visual and kinetic skills and talents manifested a high regard of prominent Filipino customs.  Likewise, the unity through bayanihan encompasses the prominent value of Filipinos that highlights our identity as one and as a unified entity. Furthermore, the degree of unity overachieved the extent of each other’s diversity. By aiming for a common goal, hand in hand everyone worked to achieve the sought after success.

Letter of Appreciation from Bro Ric Santos (UP '72)

bro ric

Note of gratitude from a respected Triskelion brother, Bro Ric Santos (UP '72), to fellow Triskelions of the Mid-Atlantic Region:

"Fellow Triskelions,

During my trip to Washington D.C. last week, I was fortunate to be able to attend the 9th Annual Solomons Island Getaway hosted by our brethren from Mid-Atlantic. It was indeed a fraternal hearth-warming weekend event attended by TMAR  and NERC Triskelions and their families. It had activities for every member of the family.  The fact that TMAR has been hosting this every year, is testament to this region's great Triskelion leadership.

I was very happy to meet outstanding TMAR brothers and sisters and their families, and also reminisce with Brods Erwin, Dodie and Sis Daisy from North East whom I haven't seen in a while. Great camaraderie.

Hospitality by Brod Dale and the Mid-Atlantic Triskelions is second to none.  I felt very much at home during my trip due to their exceptional warmth and friendship.

Brod Alan also was kind enough to drive me around the D.C. area.

Thank you all for making my visit memorable!

Very Respectfully,

Ric Santos

Solomons Island Tiskelions' Summer Getaway '09

solomons '09

The recently held Solomons Island Summer Getaway was again participated by two of the well-established regional councils in the east coast area. It was in its ninth year of successful camaraderie that highlights immense family involvement and brotherhood's strong bonding ties. Hosted by the Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Regional Council (TMAR) and joined by the Northeast Triskelions Regional Council (NERC), the outcome of the getaway was in full blast. Not only it displayed the tests of real strength, freewill and brotherhood but also it was indeed the declaration of meeting the best of both worlds.

The Navy Recreation Center, Solomons Island in Maryland as it is known to encompass wide varieties of lodging and indoor and outdoor recreational activities, tenders as well an eminent venue to explore and make the most out of everyone’s leisure time. This state of the art epitome of mini-paradise offers a great venue for island adventure and ample opportunities of discovery and venture to the amusement world. It also suggests a vast range of chances in seeking to get away from the demanding time and work schedules in the metropolitan district. With this, it is undeniably a ‘mini-escape from reality’.

Among the sought after adventures in this minuscule paradise are ventured by the whole bunch of trippers. During daytime, Triskelion brothers warmly greet the sun while angling to catch some fish in the river whereas their better halves and the sisses get themselves preoccupied with food preparations and other sort of indoor recreational activities like karaoke singing, bingo and card playing. Their children, on the other hand, get involve in playing various sports like volleyball, swimming, tennis and basketball and other interactive games of charades and poker during the night, to name some. During nighttime, everyone gets his own piece of share in making every night as enjoyable as possible. Everybody gathers together after grabbing his own dinner plate and ends the night by dint of valuable conversations and social get together. Lastly, families, all together, bonded in form of other activities like BBQ cookout and they shared out Maryland’s ever-famous blue crabs as alternately served in meals. This broad range of pleasures and interests kept everyone going throughout the end of the retreat.

The annual “Solomons event” of the Triskelions came to another successful year last July 10-12, 2009. Never a routine, Triskelions and their families have always looked this summer getaway experience forward to.  The camaraderie between two east coast regional councils – MAR and NERC - was even strengthened and their families continuously extend, expand and progress as unified entities of the Triskelion community. From the first and finest generations to the potentially superb youth, the pieces of contributions made it for everyone an excellent weekend escapade in all sorts of pursuits.

Acknowledging the presence of the NERC’s delegates, Bro Rene Ponce (UE ‘78), Bro Erwin Gopez (UP ‘74), Sis Daisy Pascual-Secor (FEU ‘87), Bro Chris dela Cruz (Arellano ‘93), Bro Jeff Gopez (ADU ‘77), Bro Dodie de Guzman (UP ‘76), Bro Conrad Castro (T.Y.M. ‘90), Bro JP Pontiveros (PUP ‘94) and their respective families, the whole weekend getaway became meaningful and has been worthy to be done in a more frequent as possible occasion. Lastly, the rest of the Triskelions were fortunate enough to be joined by a respected Triskelion brother who flew all the way from San Diego, CA, Bro Ric Santos (UP '72), who as well served as their special guest of the activity.

The whole event could not have been feasible without the effort of both MAR and NERC. The Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region’s hospitality to provide a warm welcome to the Northeast Triskelions and NERC’s full support to this endeavor has blossomed into a fruitful experience together. Through the outstanding leadership of Bro Dale Aguirre (CSJL ‘86), the achievable event of this year’s getaway has come to reality. Another applause for another success! This is one of the greatest bonding experiences anybody could ever imagine. It was indeed a grand treat for the whole growing Triskelion family.

Pistang Pilipino 2009: Tucker Road Community Picnic

-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB '03-

pistang pinoy '09

Another form of celebration for Filipinos all over the world! The 111th Philippine Independence Day made way for the Filipinos in metro DC area to gather around for another significant event as we celebrate the remarkable Independence Day. Being part of the month long celebration, the annual Community Picnic "Pistang Pilipino" was held last 28th of June 2009 in Tucker Road, Fort Washington, MD.

Led by Mr. Ador Carreon and sponsored by the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc., the "Pistang Pilipino '09" was partaken and supported by various Filipino community organizations. These groups volunteered to perform respective and exemplary talents and other forms of contributions in making the event as successful as possible. Some of the outstanding groups that enable this auspicious hit and who presented themselves well during the parade were the Philippine Embassy, Pinoy Teachers Network, Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority of Mid-Atlantic Region, La Salle Philippines Alumni, Alpha Phi Omega District of Columbia Alumni Association, Philippine Nurses Association, Marinduquenos, Miss Teenage Philippines and Court and Beauty Queens from Virginia Beach.

The program followed the series of activities from remarks to fun games, entertainment and giving away of prizes by raffle drawing. The amusement part of the program showcased performances of Filipino groups and individuals from children to young adults - with distinctive talents and in various genres. Mostly students from different colleges and universities of Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia areas contributed these performances. And such presentations kept the flow of the program going and made everyone relaxed and entertained throughout the affair.

The day ended with interactive parlor games prepared by the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity and actively participated by different organizations, including Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region and the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, itself. In addition, closing the event was the awarding of trophies for special prizes and raffle ticket drawing with two round trip tickets to Manila as major prizes.

pista sa mrs. phils home

The Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region (TMAR) hosted a truly unique Mothers' Day Celebration at the Mrs. Philippines Homes, Fort Washington, Maryland last May 2, 2009. This community service project called "Fiesta sa Mrs. Philippines Homes, Hatid Saya sa Ating Mga Ina", which could turn out to be an annual TMAR event honoring mothers, was attended by over 50 guest and by all accounts was a complete success.

TMAR Officers and members actively participated in all the festivities. Bro. Alan Uyenco (UP '69) started the event by leading the opening prayer. Bro Jhun Cajayon (RTU '85) and Sis Tess Santiago (CLSU '92) as emcees captivated and wowed the residents and attendees with their quick wit and banter. Master DJ Bro. Eric Talavera (FEU '78) kept everyone engaged with his outstanding music selections. Organizers, residents and guest enjoyed a memorable experience.

The Hon. Rico Fos, outgoing Philippine Consul and First Secretary was one of the celebration's guest speaker. Pinoy Herald's Mr. Dino Tiongco delivered a very "inspirational" and "heartfelt" message. Both guest speakers were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for their work with community civic causes. The Hon. So Long: TMAR’s Offering for Bro. Joey de Jesus

-Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB ’03-

bro joey1

It is indeed a poignant event for the rest of the Mid-Atlantic Triskelions to have a dear brother who would fleetingly leave the region at a glimpse. There is even no any easy way to bid a special person goodbye than allow this person to feel that his return will be awaited. Moreover, there could be no dull times of having to say goodbyes rather a longing to express these three words with heartfelt emotions and full hope: "see you soon".

It has been over six months past since fate led an honorable UST brother to be part of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council. It was in the course of the Filipino festival in Washington, D.C. that brothers and sisters eagerly welcomed him in the region. From then, Bro Joey de Jesus effectively participated in every single occasion he can commit himself to and wholeheartedly became active with the undertakings of the fraternity. Affirming himself with the duties and responsibilities, he as well rendered his full-fledged dedication of becoming a productive Triskelion in numerous ways. And with that, he was able to contribute to the pride and glory of the fraternity's existence. Hence, as a "remarkable asset" Bro Joey has become, the rest of the TMAR decided to give him the real blast of surprise as time calls to temporarily make him leave the region.

On the 21st day of March, TMAR gathered in Springfield, VA to give Bro Joey and his family a surprise "despedida" dinner. It was six days before the family's trip going home to the Philippines that this event took place. The overwhelming sending of messages to the family was handed over as Bro Joey was honored by his deserved acknowledgment. He was then given the recognition and membership certificates by the region's Secretary General, Bro Dale Aguirre. The rest of the night followed the pleasurable Triskelions' get together activity in a different but nearby venue. The whole night of billiards playing and other sorts of bonding became very memorable for everyone, especially for the family of Bro Joey. it has been a fantastic night in spite of the intention and sole reason of the gathering.

The night may have ended with the literal "goodbyes" but the wishful thinking at the back of everyone's minds undertone the brother's sooner return.

Tau Gamma Sigma's 40th Founding Year Anniversary Celebration: Mid-Atlantic Region's Panache

-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB '03-

sigma's anniversary

A Ruby Anniversary Celebration was organized in Fort Washington, Maryland in honor of the Tau Gamma Sigma's in the region last January 17, 2009. Its illustrious counterpart, the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity, contributed to make the event as possible and as memorable as ever in the history of its existence throughout the populace.

The supposedly simple get together of the Mid-Atlantic Triskelions called for an aniversary celebration in honor of its five Sigma sisters in the area, namely, Sis Florence Data (PSBA '81), Sis Tiks Eleazar (UE '74), Sis Trixie San Mateo (UPLB '03), Sis Tess Santiago (CLSU '92) and Sis Sally Velasco (UPLB '84). Sis Tess Santiago was the one who solely hosted the event in which her residence served as the venue of the get together. The ambiance and the mood of the place were arranged especially for the Sigma sisters - from the props to the tarpaulin seal and cake offered for the Sigma's. It all paid as a special tribute to the significantly respected Sigma's in the region.

The astonishing event was highlighted when the Triskelion brothers gathered and offered the sisters their intended appreciation. It was in the form of a highly gratifying singing of the Triskelion song that they caught the Sigma's' attention. With great surprise, the Sigma's were even more treated withn utmost value as Bro Dale Aguirre, Mid-Atlantic Regional Council's Secretary General, presented to each of them a token of nobility in the form of certificates. As to GenSec claims, "the certificates are to honor thet their Tau Gamma Sigma sisters exist autonomously and they deserve to be known as who they are and for what they have done throughout the years of their existence". He , himself, even made it a point to offer them few thoughts through his heart-warming message dedicated to the Sigma's, and so with some of the Triskelion brothers present in the event. The rest of the simple program followed with fun-filled bonding activity of Karaoke singing and some sort of dancing.

Simple yet very remembering - this was how the celebration of the Mid-Atlantic Region turned out to be.

A salute to all Sigma's around the world - for the pride and principle of its existence; for bringing to reality its dignity with Tradition, Glory and Supremacy!

Leadership Revisited: My College And Sorority Lives In One
-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB '03-

trixie_tgs

Belonging to a prestigious organization in UP Los Banos campus is something to be very proud of. Wearing an ‘org shirt’ is more of putting the name of the organization to a higher extent of yelling to the world that you are one and part of a well-established group; with all the praises, reputation and kindled relationship it carries within.

Same as thousands of UP alumni who graduated from the premium university in the country, I was once a bearer of a valuable and legendary title, already written in the history and prodigy of UP. Belonging in the not so late generation of UP students ever evolved, I once acknowledged and practiced the customary “estudyante blues” we all have defined ourselves with. With a little grasp on the life of an “iska” as I spent years of my life in the same environment, I also wondered on how living would be like when what we call “social life” mingles and take part on our lives inside the campus. So as already an existing member of the Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority two years past prior to my admission to the university, going through the welcome ritual has been my 1st priority and mission that accordingly I was able to accomplish immediately. Yes freshman year, with so much of the curiosity and innocence covering all that are yet to be discovered, with only allegiance that I hold I made up my mind entering into a new level of commitment, in a new phase of my existence.

More expectations, learning and adjustments got along with few failures and sort of twists in my college life. It took a year before I was able to absorb all the difference and challenges that college life in UP offered me. It was a dare indeed, but the sweetest and a superb undertaking that I was able to overcome still.

And so the gist and the most thrilling portion of this phase is to be a part of the Triskelions’ Grand Sorority known to exist in the university. Having a good number of actively involved sisters during my time (freshman year to be exact), performing academic and non-academic extracurricular activities inside and outside the campus had not been a major difficulty to encounter. Just putting it into concept, twenty-four minds and strength is way better than that of ten or twelve. Simply saying, luckily, I had been part of my sorority during the ‘high and successful times’ of its existence. This propitious hit lasted for almost two years since year 2003, with the sorority being handled by an outstanding VetMed sister, MDG Alpha Mateo, who was a two-time “Grand Lady Triskelion” (or head, as others call it) during these days. Her term ended as her college years were over and time called for a change in headship in year 2005.

Why MDG Alpha Mateo’s term became part of my sorority life’s gist? Simple. It inspired me in ways no one has ever thought of. It is in her term that I was able to learn almost everything a beginner in this field could ever gain knowledge of. The manner on how she carried out her leadership skills, as how I saw it, taught me lessons of balancing priorities and being true to service and commitment. Also the bond that a sisterhood is expected to encompass was reflected on the manner each one treats other sisters in her own ways. And that brought more pride to me being in and being with the ‘ate’s’ I once considered having in my so-called vision where I found my other sanctuary. Diverse we all may be, but those differences I think are what brought us together – in one name, with same principles.

But as saying puts it, “it does not end there”. Far above the ground, there would still be so much to be learned. Putting into practice as another time calling permits it, being held responsible in one of the crucial tasks a Grand Council member could hold of was a sort of saddle and more of a challenging thing to deal with. Taking care of the sorority’s funds will always be an issue-conveying matter anyone could be anxiously involved into. But with the overwhelming trust your sisters give, how could you say “no” to the call of commitment you could possibly submit? Since accepting this position for a certain period of time comes with great responsibilities, I considerably gave it a shot. Giving it the benefit of the doubt, I was molded – honed to become a productive member and virtuous officer of the sorority. Never in my dreams did I realize it being a beginning of a lifelong journey of being a Triskelion. So, it served for me my own training ground for the rest of obligations that are soon to follow.

Two years after, the peak buzz took place. My turn to lead and maintain the legacy was preceded with my mission to become an effective one. But unlike the term I looked up to, I was pounded by the idea of having a few members left to continue the survival and supremacy. Fortunately, with everyone’s eagerness and honest intentions for the name and pride of being Triskelions, everything was handled with utmost regard. So, being few in number was dominantly controlled by the notion that “strength does not solely dwell with numbers”. Though significantly, number is indeed a factor, it did not hinder everyone from aiming to be united. The primary strategy of the Sigma’s during this term was to be one. Every once in a while, Triskelion sisters would get together, hang out and celebrate during the not-so-busy nights of college LB days. By living this habit out, the sisters were brought together even closer. And venues for our gatherings such as apartments and houses of sisses had even witnessed the ties that were tested and toughened through time.

With the strategy of Triskelion sisters during this term, a greater bond was formed. And with the greater bond, a family was created. Literally living up to this conquest made it easier for everyone to work together as one. Hence, activities that aimed to foster camaraderie merely among the sorority and fraternity members and to other organizations as well as to showcase sportsmanship, creativity, talents and skills were brought to life. Some of these activities are the annual Street Painting Competition, “Open Tambayan”, Inter-Organization Shirt Competition, “Triskelion Cup” (an annual Inter-Fraternity Basketball Tournament and annual Inter-Sorority Volleyball Tournament), annual Street Jazz Dance Competition entitled “Unleashed: Go Beyond the Limits (The Ultimate Moves on the Groove)”, and a major production play entitled “Pangarap sa Isang Gabi ng Gitnang Tag-Araw” (an adaptation of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night’s Dream). Additionally, services and other activities that involved voluntary participation for the benefit of the whole community were also conducted. Three of these are the participation of the Sigma sisters in “Bayani Challenge” (for the benefit of Gawad Kalinga volunteering deed), delegation of the members to the project "Clean Up UPLB" and  initiating the project “Paskong Alay” – a Christmas outreach for the elderly in an institution in San Pablo City, Laguna.

With one common and concrete mission and vision, we, the full-fledged Triskelion sisters were able to bring beyond the importance of the sorority to our lives. Not only it was a sweet victory for me upon completing my term but a preparation it has been for the rest of the resident members during that period. The most precious and the priceless encounters would always be the most wonderful – the MEMORIES of the MEMOIRS that were fulfilled. And it could, for everyone, never end there. More are soon to come up; others still to be discovered. They are already engraved in every member’s life – wherever we all may be. The legacy our commitment leaves within us would always be part of our individuality. Supremacy in strength, freewill and sisterhood – always and forever we will remain.

Simbang Gabi - December 20, 2008
-By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB '03-

simbang gabbi 08

A number of Filipino Catholics in Virginia area gathered to witness the Eucharistic celebration in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish in Arlington last December 20, 2008 - one Saturday early dawn mass. Approximately 200 guests honored this holiday season celebration led by a respectable Filipino priest, Father Jojo Opalda. This service delivered in the spirit of Christianity was also attended by the volunteer hosts - two families from Virginia and Maryland and the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and their counterpart, the Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority of Mid-Atlantic Region through the initiative efforts of Bro and Mrs. John and Maylene Ocampo of Silver Spring, MD.

The Filipinos' Simbang Gabi practice proceeded with our traditional salu-salo hosted by the aforementioned sponsors of the event. The Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Regional Council set off the equipments, food and other utensils to be used by the guests who are attending the mass. Almost already in their form, tables, chairs and other decorative materials for Christmas are enhanced to add more color to the ambiance and sensation to the celebration. Members of the Mid-Atlantic Region Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity and Tau Gamma Sigma Sorority instigated the serving of breakfast and having guests feel welcomed to join the celebration. They also prompted the creation of a lively and overwhelming atmosphere in the place where fellow Filipinos had their breakfast while getting in touch with others as well. From a number of donors, food such as arroz caldo, sausages/hotdogs, pandesal with butter/cheese, sotanghon, assorted kakanin and coffee, water and hot chocolate were served. These dishes that perked up everyone's appetite even improved and wrapped up a celebratory gist to the Filipino Christmas salu-salo and made it enjoyable for everyone, as part of the festivity.

Other hosts of the event are likewise honored by the support and presence that the volunteers offered. Community leaders in the area as well had given their praises to the fraternity/sorority on the success of the celebration. This service to the community of Arlington, Virginia was apparently again appreciated and considered to be a yearly pledge of the Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region (TMAR) in the spirit of brotherhood/sisterhood, through their devotion and incessant commitment to service.

Mid-Atlantic Region's 26 Years of Glorious Existence Celebration and Christmas Party
By Sis Trixie Ela San Mateo, MDG, UPLB ’03-

xmas '08

The Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region (TMAR) celebrated its 26 years of exceptionally outstanding existence last December 13, 2008. Along with this occasion, the festive Christmas party also took place on the same date. The whole celebration was carried out at Karaoke Idol, a Filipino-American Restaurant, located in Falls Church, VA.

With approximately 50 attendees, the party proceeded with a series of fun-filled activities that involved the participation of the whole crowd - from the Mid-Atlantic Triskelion brothers and sisters to their spouses, children and guests. With how the Tau Gamma Sigma sisters planned and organized the event was also how it followed; from the ambiance of the venue and the pleasant environment to the props, details and flow of the program. And with everyone's effort, presence, support and cooperation, the best of everything has been made possible.

The entire program was led by Bro Jhun Cajayon (RTU '85) and Sis Sally Velasco (UPLB '84), thenn followed by Bro Carmelo Mendoza (Adu '73) and Sis Flor Data (PSBA '81). The magnificent hosting skills these four equally talented MAR Triskelions brought the essence of the party to the higher sphere of enjoyment and had ease that significant moment for everyone. Also, the party was participated by the "Triskelion Santa", Bro Mike Alejandro (Claret '90), lighted up the night for the Triskelions, children and guests.

One of the highlights of the event was to make familiarly the concept of Christmas to everyone. This is as good as showing the crowd the importance of making each and every one's family the best part of having to celebrate this special time of the year. So with this concept, it has been one special part of the program that each Triskelion brother was assigned a long stem flower, to be given to their spouses while serenading our conventional Christmas song, "Pasko Na". Aside from this, the children of the Mid-Atlantic Region Triskelions were given the chance to showcase their excellent talents in front of the audience. Some of them demonstrated skills in playing different musical instruments while some featured distinctive songs of different genre. Other amusing activities concluded the enjoyment of the Chritmas Party. The children were surprised to receive their desired gifts from their parents. And on the other hand, a fun activity that involved the adult Triskelions and guests requested their presence on stage for the search of "Mr. and Mrs. Triskelion" couple of the night.

Lastly, as part of the program arranged by the Tau Gamma Sigma sisters, a special presentation and compilation of Mid-Atlantic Region Triskelions' memories was paid off as a tribute on its 26th Founding Anniversary. This slide presentation was displayed during the dinner part of the event.

The rest of the get together ended with some Karaoke singing and having fun. And this has been a simple celebration yet served as a memorable party for everyone. As the Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region Secretary General said, "it was the best party I've seen so far". And the rest is history.

Paskong Pinoy 2008

paskong pinoy 2008

The Philippine Christmas Concert "Paskong Pinoy" was held on December 6, 2008 at Edward Pryzbyla University Center Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Sponsored by the Embassy of the Philippines, Philippine-American Foundation for Charities, Inc. (PAFC), in cooperation with Filipino Organization of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), Tau Gamma Phi Mid-Atlantic Regional Council (TGPMAR) and Alpha Phi Omega District of Columbia Alumni Association (APODCAA). The goal of the Christmas Concert was to bring closer the spirit of Christmas to the Filipino community in Washington, D.C. area. In this way, the integrity of everyone as well leans forward to give meaning and credit to what Christmas truly means.

For the duration of the event, 400 guests contributed some of their time to take part on the celebration, along with the eight participating choirs from Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland. Each participating group offered at the least two Christmas carols, which brought to life the sensation of our traditional caroling way back home. Moreover, it was shown to the audience a video compilation of Filipino children and different attraction around Metro Manila during this time of the year as an opening and photos throughout the event.

This contribution to the cultural heritage of the Philippines, being known to encompass the longest Christmas celebration in the world, has shared to everyone the pride of being united as Filipinos - by mind and by heart. Along with it, this also proves that the Filipino culture continuously binds the tie and equally brings hope and joy not only to the Filipino families in these areas but also to the community at large.

Handog ng Kapatiran II - Triskelions' Service Project

-By Bro Aldwin Vidamo, Triskelion Youth Movement - Malate '91-

handogII

It's that time of the year again! The holidays are just around the corner, and Tau Gama Phi and Tau Gamma Sigma of Mid-Atlantic Region and Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association of District of Columbia, in cooperation with Zambalenos, Inc., USA, The World Bank Group IMF Filipino Staff Association and Philippine Embassy will once again share their generosity to our fellow Filipino citizens with their needs in the upcoming cold and bone chilling weather. It's the "HANDOG NG KAPATIRAN 2008".

This event will feature not only the outpouring support of the Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic to our fellow citizens but it also helps to promote the existence and the unity of several Filipino Organizations that some or most citizens are not aware of. This event also highlights the continuing cooperation of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity of Washington, D.C. to our service project(s) that some probably thought would not even get to the drawing board, perhaps, become successful. But after the Handog ng Kapatiran 2007, the results were stunning, the Tau Gamma Phi of the Mid-Atlantic Region and the Alpha Phi Omega District of Columbia Alumni Association were able to prove that we can co-exist with a rival fraternity by the way of such joint service projects. The event triggered us, Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region, to explore other service project opportunities for which we had successfully done so over the last several months. The Handog ng Kapatiran 2008 will mainly support a handful of newly migrated teachers from the Philippines. These teachers have come a long way to be here in America and we are very delighted to give them the support they need as they battle the process of being away from their families back home and the cold cracking weather of the East Coast winter. No one can deny that when the times of need come, the Filipino community are one of the best to give their hearts out to help their fellow, perhaps, anyone.  We, the Triskelions of Mid-Atlantic Region, are humbly proud of the accomplishments we have obtained by the way of servicing our fellows. We hope that our accomplishments can become the stepping-stones towards peace and unity. The Handog ng Kaptiran 2008 is a joint effort of the following Filipino Organizations in the greater D.C. are:

"On September 6, 2008, the Filipino American community will present a dynamic fundraising concert called "Alay" at Harmony Hall Regional Center in Fort Washington, Maryland.

"Alay" is to benefit the rehabilitation programs for victims of the typhoon Frank, the cataclysmic storm that devastated many areas in Iloilo. Feed the Hungry will implement the rehabilitation projects in Iloilo.

The "Alay" concert will also raise funds for a Gawad Kalinga village of new homes for the poor in Bulacan. These homes will be part of the Agos Village, which was started from funds raised by the Filipino rock group Agos.

In recent months, Agos co-founders Rico Ortanez and his wife, Badette, have done concerts in San Diego and Philadelphia raising enough funds to complete half of the village. Sadly, Rico recently passed away from cancer before the village could be finished. In a recent meeting, community leaders agreed with songwriter/musician lawyer Rodney Garcia to help fulfill Rico's wish to finish the village for the poor people of Bulacan.

The September 6 "Alay" concert at Harmony Hall will feature various professional artists who will donate time and talent, including the international and MTV stars, The SPEAKS; sizzling acoustic guitarist Odie Sotomayor; popular New York Fil-Am songstress Alfa; and singer/composer Rod Garcia.

A special set of songs will be rendered by Badette Ortanez of Agos.

Overseeing/Sponsor of the September 6 concert are representatives from the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Feed the Hungry, Gawad Kalinga, the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity of Mid-Atlantic Region and the Philippine Embassy".
